The Vertu Constellation Ayxta: yours for just 4,900 Euros

Vertu Constellation Ayxta

Back in January 2002, Nokia launched Vertu as an independent subsidiary, aiming to “bring artistry and personal significance to an everyday object, elevating it to the level of the finest timepiece.” Since then, their phones have been seen in the hands of ultra-wealthy celebrities such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Madonna and David Beckham. The Constellation Ayxta is Vertu’s first flip phone, hand-made in Britain using stainless steel, aluminium, leather and ceramics, and featuring a sapphire glass screen.

As with all Vertu phones, the Ayxta’s technological capabilities are not selling points. All we can tell you about the internals is that it runs on quad-band 3G, and sports an EU-friendly micro-USB port for charging and connectivity, and a 3 megapixel camera with twin LED flash.

Where Vertu does stay ahead of the curve is with two innovative services for their jetsetting target market.

The Vertu Concierge service offers 24-hour access to a lifestyle manager who can, err…manage your lifestyle, answering any questions you have, and ensuring Mom gets flowers for Mother’s Day and your kids get picked up after soccer practice.

The Ayxta is the first Vertu phone to offer Vertu’s City Brief. Using the on-board GPS, Vertu can detect you’ve arrived in a new city and tell you everything you need to know – bringing you up to speed on cultural business standards and faux pas, significant events or concerts in the area, and the best places for a wealthy individual to shop, wine and dine.

The Constellation Ayxta also comes preloaded with exclusive ringtones composed by Grammy-nominated English electronica act Zero 7.

If all this sounds good, the Ayxta can be yours for between 4,900 to 6,500 Euros (US$7,200 to US$9,550 at the time of publication).

Vertu is for people with more money than brains. Good grief! If they don’t know where to go when arriving at a city around the world, Just stay on the G5 and tell the captain to go someplace where they know how to find their fave caviar. As far as the concierge services are concerned, those of us with money AND brains have someone back at the office who are paid to do such mundane tasks.
The thing is ugly, fat and years behind even the cheapest (or free) phones available today. I can just see a chunky clunky Vertu owner looking over the shoulder of someone on the (heaven forbid) bus at their i-phone in a salivating state of lust.

Is there really a mobile phone that is actually worth US $10,000? One question begs to be asked – Why?

For that price, I’d just have my EA follow me around and handle all that hassle without me having to fumble with chicklet keys and smallish screens. And my EA could fetch me a coffee and crumpet when I really want. Can my cell do that?

    Not even for $10,000.
