RIM announces BlackBerry push API

While push notifications have been available to BlackBerry developers in the enterprise space, RIM today announced the availability of the BlackBerry push API, allowing developers to push content to consumer applications running on BlackBerry devices.

Push notifications on the iPhone: great for users, not so great for small developers

From day one, Apple has kept a staunch “no background processes” policy on the iPhone, claiming that the preservation of battery life is their main motivation for doing so. As a result, you need to open an application for it to check for new data, like new e-mails or items in an RSS feed.
