The myTouch 3G is the long awaited followup to the G1, T-Mobile’s first Android phone.  The device has gone by a few names in the past couple of months.  It’s the same Google Ion that was given to Google I/O attendees.  In Europe, Canada and Australia it is known as the HTC Magic.  Whatever its name is, the myTouch 3G looks like a strong improvement over the G1.

The slideout QWERTY keyboard of the G1 has been dropped in favor of the software keyboard that was added in Android 1.5 (which is called Cupcake, as Google seems to have adopted snack food names for its updates).

T-Mobile is touting customization as a big selling point.  They plan to allow many themes, wallpapers, and widgets to give the user a very personalized experience.  The device also features the Google name branding and the integration with all the Google apps (Google Search, Maps, Gmail, Picasa, YouTube etc).

One of the more interesting aspects of the device is the new Sherpa application that is included on the phone.  This software boasts that it learns from you every time you use it to find information like the location of a restaurant or hotel, and gives you better recommendations based on your past choices.

Pricing details have not been released but will be available by the time the myTouch 3G is available for pre-order on July 8th.

Update: The myTouch will cost $199 with a new 2-year contract and will begin shipping July 29
