Sprint to offer at least one Android device this year
During Fortune’s Brainstorm: Tech event in Pasadena, Sprint CEO Dan Hesse confirmed Android is now ready for prime time. The Now Network wasn’t quite comfortable with Android last year, but with the latest version of the OS, Sprint is gearing up for at least one Android device in 2009.
Late last year, I attended the National Press Club event in Washington DC where Dan Hesse said Android wasn’t ready for Sprint. I never would have guessed this statement could have been used to beat up on Sprint. It was a clear response to a direct question and a statement of fact about the position of the company that Android did still have some serious issues. Sprint wasn’t about to roll out something that would have been problematic. With steady improvement in customer support at Sprint, creating problems would certainly have been unwise.
Well, now they are ready. Of course, gadget pundits will always find something exciting to zero in on with any announcement. Sprint users and Android fans can look forward to great things here.
“The reviews say now it’s ready for prime time,” Hesse said. “It wasn’t when it first came out.”
Hesse said Sprint will have at least one Android-based device for sale this year.
