RIM working to make Gmail on Blackberry more like…Gmail

Blackberry Gmail Plug-in

Blackberry Gmail Plug-in

Gmail on a Blackberry device is not an easy thing to work with.  Since IMAP is near impossible to use on the device, you are left with only two solutions: POP access or the Gmail app. Neither of which provide users with the great experience they are used to. There is hope, however, because RIM is working on a plug-in that will make Gmail on a Blackberry work more like it works on a desktop.

The plug-in will give users the features they’ve come to love from the web app.  It will let you view emails in a conversation thread to allow better context.  It will also give users the ability to add and remove labels as well as star them for better organization.  The crucial ability to archive will be added as well as reporting emails as spam, and the ability to search your entire Gmail inbox.

Previously, solutions to Gmail on the Blackberry have been poor.  I’ve used POP on mine, but all the emails I received that were supposed to be automatically filtered and archived were sent to my Blackberry (which is quite a nuisance).  You can also use the Gmail app for Blackberry, but that allows no integration with Blackberry messages or contacts and it cannot display images.

The plug-in is currently only available to Blackberry beta testers, and it is unknown when it will be released.
