Sprint announces the HTC Hero coming October 11

When the HTC Hero and it’s new Sense UI were introduced in June, the question on everyone’s minds was when is this thing coming to the US.  Little by little, bits of information and speculation came and it was basically a given that the Hero would first be coming to Sprint.  Today they made it official, the Hero (well a trimmed up version, without the awkward chin) will be coming exclusively to Sprint this October.

Will it scan?

The bigger question is, will they buy it? Barcode scanning makes sense and people may like it but it’s not making anyone serious money yet here in the US. Carriers and partners are in it for one reason and that reason starts with a dollar sign. Until that part of the equation is clearly in place, nothing will happen.

I recently wrote about a test Sprint is doing at 500 movie theaters where customers get snack “upgrades” when they scan in a code from their phones at a kiosk located inside the theater. If it takes off, we could see new, useful applications that utilize scanning technology, but it will take a lot for that “if” to pay off. This isn’t the first test and it probably won’t be the last.

According to a couple of surveys of iPhone 3GS and Pre users conducted by RBC Capital and ChangeWave Research 99% of 3GS users are satisfied with their device as opposed to 87% of Pre owners.
