The new iPhone 3G S will be available on June 19 in Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland and the U.S. Similar in outside appearance to the iPhone 3G model the newest model has made the biggest changes on the inside.

The iPhone 3G S has a faster processor, more onboard memory and rumoured to have better display circuits. This new iPhone will also be able to use 7.2 Mbps HSDPA, which offers twice the bandwidth of the existing iPhone 3G.

Many features that users wanted or thought should have been included in the previous iPhone have been included and increase the functionality of the iPhone 3G S.

iPhone 3G S Video

The iPhone 3G S includes a 3-megapixel camera, which can be used for capture and editing of still images and video. You can take advantage of the touch screen capabilities to improve the image using a feature referred to as “tap to focus”. This feature will automatically adjust the focus, color, exposure and contrast.

Early reports had indicated this new model would be priced lower than its predecessor, but it appears that the pricing won’t actually change. What will be different is that for the same amount of money you will get more storage.

Graphics will look much better on this version as Apple is using the OpenGL ES 2.0 3D graphics standard and this will help with battery life when using graphic intensive applications.

A feature that was desired in the earlier iPhone was the ability to cut, copy and paste within the iPhone OS and this is finally present and will be included in the iPhone 3.0 OS update.

iPhone 3G S Landscape Keyboard

Another feature that was highly requested was a landscape keyboard. It’s much easier to use and feels more like a traditional keyboard. The landscape keyboard can be activated when using Mail, Messages, Notes or Safari.

Spotlight Search was another missed feature and desired by many users. This time Apple has included it and you can search all the data within your iPhone 3G S or limit the search to specific apps.

While U.S customers will not be able to take advantage of the Tethering feature at this time, as AT&T is not supporting this, users elsewhere will have this option, of course providing the local service provider supports it. It is a nice feature to have and not to worry about messing around with third-party applications to have this feature.

iPhone 3G S Voice Control

Keeping in mind that hands-free is especially important for those on the road the 3G S incorporates voice control technology. These commands will let you make calls, play music and record voice memos.

iPhone 3G S Compass

A very cool feature that may only appeal to those who spend a great deal of time outdoors or just love unique (very geeky) applications will like the ability to have a digital compass which will operate just a normal compass would. It will be activated through a dedicated application and you can view your current location using the integrated iPhone GPS system.

With the compass feature, you don’t have to worry about getting lost but what about losing your iPhone? That is covered as well by the inclusion of an application called Find My iPhone, which will help you, locate your lost iPhone on a map within MobileMe and then send you a message to tell you where to find your iPhone. If you can’t get to your iPhone and you are concerned about the data contained; the Find My iPhone includes an option called Remote Wipe to clear all your content.

It certainly appears that Apple has listened to what users want, and taken the steps to provide them with the iPhone 3G S.

How can this stuff be called *NEW*?
I mean, I’ve had most of these new features since the ’90s!

Currently on my HTC Tilt on AT&T’s network, I am able to:
Use HSDPA (have been for the last year and a half)
3-megapixel camera (also been using this for the last year and a half, not to mention, full video *AND* geotagging of images which I’ve been able to do for the last 2 years!)
cut, copy and paste (duh! I’ve been doing this for the last 15 years on my phones)
Tethering…(uh, my phone is *NOW* tethered and I’m on the AT&T network too!)
Landscape keyboard (also since the late 90s)
Hands free voice control, plus my phone talks back (last 3 years now)
MMS (this is another DUH! I’ve been doing this for the last 3 years)
It’s amazing that these iPhone users are all jonesing about things I’ve been doing with other phones for years!
In all, this iPhone is a yawner..
