According to the New York Times, Amazon is preparing to launch a new version of the Kindle e-reader, with a larger screen more conducive to reading digital copies of newspapers and magazines. Naturally, old media are salivating at the thought of such a device – hoping the additional real estate for ads combined with Amazon’s existing subscription platform will allow them to dust off the business model of selling subscriptions to ad-supported content.
Though it might be a while until the glossy magazines get on board. Tom Wallace, editorial director at Condé Nast, publisher of magazines such as Wired and GQ, says:
“I don’t think we would be anywhere near as excited about anything in black and white as we would about high-definition color [...] But technology changes at a pretty high clip these days, and if we are now in the Farmer Gray days, it will be only a very short while until we are in the video game era.”
The new Kindle will compete with similar devices from News Corporation, Hearst and Plastic Logic, all expected within 12 months, and if the rumors are true, a touch-screen tablet from Apple.
