Broadcom 802.11n chip in iPhone 3.0 beta firmware
Prince McLean from AppleInsider was digging through resource files in the iPhone OS 3.0 beta, and found reference to a new Broadcom chip (BCM4329) that may replace the BCM4325 chip which provides Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity to current models of the iPhone and iPod touch.
The BCM4329 supports single- (2.4GHz) and dual-band (2.4GHz + 5GHz) 802.11n and promises decreased power consumption when active or idle.
A move to the BCM4329 chip would make sense, as Apple’s recent Airport Extreme routers support dual-band 802.11n, and poor battery life is one of the criticisms of the iPhone, which lacks a replaceable battery.
