You’ve been able to send MIDI and Open Sound Control (OSC) messages from iPhone apps via WiFi for a while now, but Line 6 has taken things up a notch with the first hardware MIDI interface for the iPhone.
Just about every piece of music equipment (synthesizers, effects units etc) released in the last 30 years has had MIDI input and output, and MIDI is still in use in even the most bleeding-edge music production software.
As such, the MIDI Mobilizer allows you to do some very handy things:
- Take a backup of your settings from (and restore them to) any MIDI-capable gear
- Easily record a synth phrase to take to band practice or a studio session
- Send a standard MIDI format (SMF) file via email
Given the proliferation of iPhones and iPod touches, we’re guessing the MIDI Mobilizer will find its way into the workflows, or at least the emergency toolkits, of a great many musicians.
