iPhone SMS Security Vulnerability
A software patch to fix the vulnerability that could be exploited is in the works after security experts found a flaw in the way text messages are handled on iPhone. The weakness could be exploited to gain control of the device.
The flaw works by exploiting a weakness in SMS protocols, potentially enabling access to GPS features of the iPhone. Criminals could then track the phone’s location, remotely activate the microphone, or take over the device for sending spam, distributed denial of service attacks and other online crime.
“I can definitely make the thing crash,” he said. “I have still to determine whether it’s actually exploitable or not. This thing has the potential to be really serious, but I’m still looking at it and Apple is still looking at it.”
