iPhone 3.0 Firmware Download

Right on schedule, Apple has released the iPhone 3.0 firmware update. This update fixes a number of issues and adds new features that bring the platform up to speed with Android, BlackBerry, Symbian and Windows Mobile.

The firmware update enables iPhone users to cut and paste, search through the entire phone, send MMS messages (if supported by the carrier), and record voice memos. New push-notification can alert users on events when an app is closed. So, for example, instant messaging can remain connected and send notifications to the user as messages arrive when another program is running.

A host of media improvements including the somewhat novel (but also extremely cool) “shake-to-shuffle” feature as well as the ability to download movie, TV shows, audio books, and music videos through iTunes. There is a 1o MB limit for over the air downloads through a carrier connection.

Developers will also be able to access more areas of iPhone which will likely advance the evolution of applications over the next few months. Look for in-app purchasing ability, peer-to-peer connectivity in multiplayer games, and specialized accessories that plug into the phone’s docking port.
