GelaSkins iPhone 3G skin review

Shortly before heading off to Las Vegas for CES this year, the SwitchEasy CapsuleRebel case I had my iPhone 3G in broke. I had to take it off to plug a majority of 3.5mm to RCA cables into the phone, which I do often, and eventually the corner snapped off completely.

I realized a few things after that. Firstly, protective cases ruin the sleek look and feel of the device. They can also hinder your ability to dock the phone and use the 3.5mm jack for pretty much anything but Apple headphones. And finally, if I had to buy a new case every few months, I’d spend nearly half as much as the phone itself was worth – even though I was paying a small monthly fee to my carrier to replace it should anything go wrong.

So now that protection from blunt trauma was off the shopping list, I needed something to stop the back of the phone from getting scratched – which seems to happen if you so much as look at it the wrong way. At LAX, I found a GelaSkin discounted to $10 from the usual $14.95 asking price, and figured I’d give it a shot.

Read on for my review, which is just a bit longer than the intro you just read.

Sitting in a bad restaurant with a colleague, I attempted to put the skin onto my phone. For the next 15 minutes I was, to be perfectly honest, cursing the jerk who sold me the thing. I found it impossible to get the camera hole lined up with the camera, failed so many application attempts that one of the corners wouldn’t stick properly anymore, and there were folds in the skin over the corners of the phone when I finally gave up.

Frustrated, I decided to leave the GelaSkin on my phone until I found a better option.

A few days later, I realized that the corner had decided to stick, and those folds in the curved areas had all but disappeared. It was almost like a new pair of jeans stretching in the right places.

Three months later, and the GelaSkin is certainly looking worse for wear, but it’s held up surprisingly well – especially compared to what the back of the phone would have looked like by now without the GelaSkin stuck to it.

So if you’re with me on the fact that cases suck, but want to protect the resale value of your phone, and can handle a bit of a pain getting the thing on there, try a GelaSkin. There’s hundreds of designs available so I’d imagine you could find something that resonated with you. They come with matching iPhone-formatted wallpaper, too.

GelaSkins are available for $14.95 at www.gelaskins.com and a bunch of retailers.
