Geeks abound at Google I/O. So do surprises!

In addition to the demonstrations, Google announced that each of more than 4,000 conference attendees will receive a free Google phone.

The conference is for those who dream in code to meet and collaborate on new things in development at Google. More than 4,000 attendees received a G2 (HTC Magic) with 30 days of unlimited data service as a thank you to the developer community and certainly a great strategic move — an instant Android developer army was also amassed with the concurrent announcement of Android Developer Challenge 2 along with the G2 giveaway.

Look forward to innovation in this space. The categories for ADC2 run the gamut:

  • Education/Reference
  • Games: Casual/Puzzle
  • Games: Arcade/Action
  • Social Networking
  • Lifestyle
  • Productivity/Tools
  • Media
  • Entertainment
  • Travel
  • Misc

1st prize in each category is $100,000 and there’s an overall winner 1st prize of $150,000, so one deserving and talented dreamer will walk away with $250,000 in November.
