Deutsche Telekom (T-Mobile) to prevent iPhone customers from using Skype

T-Mobile: No Skype for you

T-Mobile: No Skype for you

Deutsche Telekom plans to block customers from using Skype for iPhone in Germany, claiming the data traffic would hinder the performance of their 3G network and Wi-Fi hotspots.

All mobile providers in Germany and France contractually prevent customers from using VoIP applications on their networks.

Ars Technica is reporting that T-Mobile plans to block the Skype app from being downloaded, rather than blocking the ports required to use the app on their 3G network and Wi-Fi hotspots so customers can still use Skype for iPhone when an unrestricted Wi-Fi connection is available, like at home or the office.

This seems like an exercise in futility, as customers could simply download the application to their iPhone using their home Internet connection. Unfortunately, German iPhone users have no way of voting with their wallets as T-Mobile is the exclusive carrier of the iPhone in Germany.

According to Skype, Skype for iPhone is currently the most downloaded application from the App Store in Germany.
