Could the Pre have had crocodile keys?

If you’re preemptively disappointed in your Pre’s keyboard, imagine how David Baker feels. The British inventor tells The Register that his Crocodile Keyboard was headed for Palm Pilots, but the project was scrapped due to “manufacturing costs.”

The triangular design has more space around each key than a conventional thumb keyboard, a feature that may cut down on the mashing that The Boy Genius Report recently suggested is inevitable on Palm’s newest creation.

Mr. Baker now wants to take his invention to the iPhone in virtual form, proposing that it become part of the operating system itself, but laments Apple’s lack of enthusiasm.
