You may not even realize that using a cell phone for prolonged periods may be causing you injury. Moreover, that injury is to your elbow. Have you ever wondered why your arm and your elbow in particular are rather sore after finishing a lengthy cell phone conversation or series of calls in a short time frame?

If you weren’t interested in getting yourself a hands-free device, even though it is required in most jurisdictions for use while driving, then you might wish to change your mind or suffer some pain.

Along with the ailment “BlackBerry thumb”, doctors are now saying that a common complaint arising from those who regularly use their cell phones is “cell phone elbow”. The medical term is cubital tunnel syndrome, and it is caused when you compress the ulnar nerve.

You should note that this condition could also be caused by using a computer such as your laptop in a non-ergonomic position such as on an airplane, in a train or in a cramped coffee shop.

Our elbows aren’t meant to be in the unnatural position we force them into while talking on our cell phones and in severe cases of cubital tunnel syndrome surgery may be the only solution to correct the damage.

From now on, take the time to change your cell phone habits and get yourself a hands-free device. Your elbow and your wallet will appreciate it.
