New iPhone Monday?
Financial Times reports Apple may introduce a new, less expensive iPhone as soon as Monday. What a coincidence—something cheaper and already widely known—just in time for those not yet convinced of the Palm Pre panacea.
The report indicates either a $149 or $99 version is planned with analysts forecasting a 50-100% increase in demand, depending on the final price point. Apple now has just 11% of the market on smartphones. An “entry level” iPhone could attract non smartphone users, increasing popularity of the platform at a very opportune time.
Apple declined to comment, but Steve Jobs is rumored to make a surprise announcement during the WWDC keynote Saturday. With Saturday’s release of the new Palm Pre and Sprint’s $199 pricing for the device, a surprise like this by Apple is great news for consumers.
